Brief description and main aims

Clínica Asistencial “La Caridad” is a public health care centre that offers daily medical care to approximately 35 to 40 patients from the rural community El Guante, a village of Cedros located in the valley Talanga, 72 km north of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras.

Emergency cases are sent to Tegucigalpa with the clinic’s ambulance. The main aim of the clinic is to provide health services and health education to the population of El Guante and the surrounding communities. 

The clinic offers a variety of health services mainly taking care of children and pregnant women, health promotion activities mainly vaccinating children & also promoting the importance of ensuring potable water, and raising awareness of living healthy lives.

Main Activities

The health care centre carries out these main activities:

  • Health services, mainly taking care of children and pregnant women.
  • Health promotion activities, mainly vaccinating children and also promoting the importance of treating water, giving presentations in schools, and more.
  • Bonding with the communities and getting to know their social problems to help them.
  • Administrative work (i.e. organizing the patients’ forms), especially during the days when the doctor only does consultations for emergencies.

Volunteer tasks

There are two types of work that a volunteer can carry out:

  • Health Promotion Activities – assisting to vaccinate children, family planning strategies, prenatal care, health-related presentations & activities in nearby communities, sometimes working in cooperation with the health clinic of another town called El Suyatal.
  • Health Services – the volunteer’s tasks will depend on his/her knowledge and interests, the schedule and the amount of patients. The doctor stays the whole day in the clinic if there are enough patients or goes to another clinic; the volunteer can assist the doctor, the nurses and/or the dentist.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should :
  • be at least 18 years old.
  • preferably have basic knowledge of Spanish because many of the volunteer’s tasks involve communicating with the patients
  • have a scientific background such as medicine knowledge.
  • have strong medical and oratory skills
  •  be independent and show initiative to carry out tasks

Location

The project is located in El Guante, Cedros, Valle de Talanga, Francisco Morazán.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family.

More Information

The project is available to start in August and February every year for 6-12 months.
