Brief description and main aims

Fundación Señor San José is a non-profit, Christian-faith based, organisation that provides shelter to at-risk children and teenagers in order to help them have an integral growth. The risk that the children and youth were facing include poverty and family dysfunction due to alcoholism and drug addiction.


The home aims to provide  them a safe environment so that their reintegration into society is beneficial. The organisation’s mission is to show solidarity with the poorest, neglected and at social risk boys and girls, providing them a home where they develop spiritually, intellectually, culturally and socially, thus taking action on the suffering of other human beings.

The organisation’s vision is to be a safe home for at social risk boys and girls, providing the necessary resources for their integral development, searching for sustainability with our own efforts and involving local, national and international people and community groups.

Main Activities

  • The organisation has an approximate 20 children and teenagers, aged 5-16, of the Honduran departamento La Paz.
  • All the children and teenagers go to a public school from Monday to Friday. Some attend during the mornings and others during the afternoon. There are always children and teenagers at the home.
  • The organisation provides a home and all the meals for the children and teenagers.
  • The children and teenagers receive reinforcement lessons and/or tutoring for different subjects they are learning at school.
  • Classes in computer science are also provided, as well as motivational and leadership speeches.

Volunteer tasks

  • Together with the staff members, the volunteer will create a schedule in order to teach one or more of the following subjects (according to the volunteer’s skills, knowledge and interests): English, computer science, music, handcrafts, paint.
  • The volunteer can assist the staff members with the reinforcement lessons.
  • Do sports and leisure activities with the children and teenagers.
  • Assist the staff members to organise extracurricular activities, such as the creation of handicrafts with recycled materials, painting murals, among others.
  • If the volunteer is interested, he/she can get involved with cooking the daily meals.
  • Get involved in the administration of the institution and help with office work. 
  • The volunteer can propose any other activity that strengthens the personality and self-esteem of the children and teenagers.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should:
  • be at least 18 years old.
  • know basic Spanish and basic English.
  • like to work with children and teenagers
  • be a patient person and very proactive.
It is not required for the volunteer to be a Christian, but the volunteer must be respectful that this project is a Christian-faith based organisation and carries out Christian rituals, such as praying.
 
Background experience in primary education is desirable, and any experience working with children and teenagers.

Location

The porject is located in La Paz, La Paz.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family.

More Information

The project is available to start in August and February every year for 6-12 months.
