Brief description and main aims

Albergue de Niños El Refugio is an interdenominational home for children and youth, aged 4-20, who for a variety of socioeconomic reasons cannot grow up with their families. The home was founded in 1994 with the main goal of providing opportunities to Honduran children and youth for a better future, providing shelter, food, health services, education, psychological support and recreation.

Main Activities

The home hosts approximately 70 children and youth who permanently live on-site. The home also has an on-site elementary school and teenagers attend local high schools, and is supported by a foundation from Switzerland.

Volunteer tasks

Volunteers can assist children and youth providing them tutoring lessons and help them out with their school homework, teach them English lessons, and organise recreational activities such as sports and handicrafts.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

  • 25-30 years old.
  • Female or male.
  • Ideally have a fair to fluent Spanish knowledge, and good English skills.
  • Have a background in teaching, psychology, nursing, social work or arts.
  • The volunteer must be dynamic, patient, able to adjust to a new environment, be open-minded and reliable, honest and mature.

Location

Ticamaya, Choloma, Cortés.
