Brief description and main aims

Centro Nacional de Conservación y Recuperación de Especies, Zoológico “Rosy Walther” is a governmental institution that promotes the conservation, recovery and investigation of species, encouraging environment education with people of all ages and educational levels, strengthening the bonds between human beings, the environment and the national patrimony, teaching about the responsible interaction and appropriate coexistence with wild life in their natural habitats.

It is based next to the Parque Naciones Unidas “El Picacho”, and is part of the Honduran governmental ministry Secretaría de Energía, Recursos Naturales, Ambiente y Minas – MI AMBIENTE+ (Ministry  of  Energy,  Natural  Resources,  Environment  and  Mines  –  MY  ENVIRONMENT+). Rosy  Walther  was  a Honduran entrepreneur who in 1979 promoted the creation of a zoo in Tegucigalpa, which became this centre for the conservation and recovery of species.

Main Activities

 
The Zoológico “Rosy Walther” covers an area of 25.1 acres, of which 9 acres is composed of its infrastructure for the animals living in it and the visitors. There are non-native animals such as the lion, ostrich, blue golden macaw, peacock, and pheasant, and the emblematic jaguar and tapir. The zoo provides environment education on the flora and fauna of Honduras, studies its issues, encourages the conservation of wild fauna and scientific research, and the opportunity for ecological tourism and a recreational area.

Volunteer tasks

Volunteers can support in two types of areas:

  • Technical-veterinary: mainly supporting in taking care of the different animals that live in the zoo (approximately 72 species of different animals such as birds, mammals and reptiles, with an approximate total of 400 animals).
  • Management and Marketing: visiting schools to raise awareness about the importance to conserve the environment, supporting in environment education activities with schools (scientific fairs, exhibitions on flora and fauna), being a tourist guide in the zoo, supporting in the staff trainings, and being a community manager of the social media accounts of the centre.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should:
  • be at least 18 years old
  • have basic Spanish and English proficiency
  • have a high school or university degree
  • be very interested in working with animals
  • have a good attitude to coexist daily with the environment
  • be proactive and collaborative

Location

The project is located in Tegucigalpa, Francisco Morazán and Zoológico “Rosy Walther”, Francisco Morazán.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a Host Family.

More Information

The project is available to start in August and February every year for 6-12 months.
