Brief description and main aims

ACI-Participa - Asociación para una Ciudadanía Participativa is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation founded in 2003 with the main aim of promoting respect of human rights in Honduras, encouraging citizenship participation in the decision-making sectors. It provides professional aid to unions, human rights groups, student associations, the LGBTIQ+ community, environmentalists, feminist organisations and other advocates of democratic values. It also works with children and youth in training processes on values, leadership and positive behaviour changes.
 
The organisation receives financial and technical support from the following main partners: International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH for its acronym in French), World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT for its acronym in French), European Union, Pan American Development Foundation – PADF, Freedom House, HEKS/EPER, We Effect (formerly Swedish Cooperative Centre), Trócaire, GIZ (DeutscheGesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH), Hivos, among others.

Main Activities

ACI-Participa monitors violations of human rights, publishes reports of the state of human rights in Honduras, offers workshops on several human rights matters, participates in press conferences and media publications, among other activities.

It also plans and facilitates training processes on citizenship participation, youth leadership, children rights, positive and proactive changes of teenagers, among other themes.
 
It also works with Garífuna/Garinagu women, one of Honduras main afro descendant ethnic communities, on issues of citizenshipparticipation, social auditing, women’s rights and empowerment on issues of democracy and freedom.

Volunteer tasks

Taking into consideration that ACI-Participa’s works with fundamental pillars such as training on values, social audit, citizenship participation, human rights, and access to justice, the volunteer can plan and carry out his/her own project or join one of the current projects of the organisation.

Tasks may include, but are not limited to,:

  • writing reports
  • working with the creation of social media content,
  • helping out in different workshops
  • doing Spanish and English translations
Before coming to Honduras, the volunteer will agree together with the organisation what kind of project she/he will carry out. The volunteer can have access to visit rural communities, supporting different activities for the projects carried out throughout the year. Whilst doing visits, ACI-Participa provides transport and board & lodging as necessary, always accompanied by trained staff.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should: 
  • be at least 21 yeras old 
  • have at least an intermediate level (B1) of Spanish proficiency
  • have a genuine interest in human rights, positive changes of youth, and strengthening ethical and moral values
  • preferably have at least some post-secondary education (i.e. currently enrolled or university graduate)
Knowledge of English is an asset.

Location

The project is located in Tegucigalpa. 

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family.
