Thang Long School was established in 1994 and funded monthly by Saigon Children’ Charity (SCC) which helps disadvantaged Vietnamese children get a better education and life. Thang Long School provides the teenagers free courses such as hotel and restaurant hospitality, hairdressing, sewing and tailoring, computer science and information technology, photography and English as their main course.
The aim of the project is provide the vocational training or English courses for the teenagers in the surrounding areas to practic.
All the students here come from poor families, aged 11 to 19 years old. Their parents send the applications to the school to enter them into a good environment, especially a more interactive English learning environment.
The English class gives the students a chance to learn from native speakers while also building a closer relationship with them. There are three different basic English classes in the morning, the afternoon and the evening. Each class lasts for about one and a half hours with about 10 to 20 students in each class.
For vocational training the volunteer will work together with a Vietnamese teacher to help student. Only those who have background on vocational training such as restaurant, hospitality, hairdressing, sewing and tailoring, computer science and information technology, photography will be accepted to this project.
For English education project.
Volunteers will be responsible for taking control of the English class at Thang Long School. There are no local volunteers and the volunteers are expected to work as the main teacher with the assistance of the Vietnamese teachers at the school in translating and maintaining the class. The volunteers are required to make lesson plans using the learning materials provided to ensure continuity in learning for the students. Although most of students have studied English in the past, it is unlikely they know how to speak and listen properly. Due to this, volunteer’s work should be concentrated on helping students with speaking and listening.
The volunteers will teach 5 mornings, 3 afternoons and 2 evenings from Monday to Friday.
Volunteer requirements / Skills
Volunteers must be 18 years old minimum. Volunteers must show eagerness, the ability to maintain motivation and reliability. Related to this, volunteers need to show creativity and initiative when planning and taking classes. Most importantly, volunteers need to have confidence in the classroom and time management skills to ensure an effective lesson.
Thang Long School is located in District 4, not so far away from VPV house in District 7. The volunteers will take one bus (No. 31) to get there in about 30 minutes.
Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)
Volunteers will stay in a dormitory, sharing rooms with volunteers of other nationalities joining the same program. Normally, rooms are arranged with about 1-4 volunteers per room. In the busy time, the number can be maximum either 10 or 6 volunteers per room in five or three bunk beds respectively.
Western toilets and hot showers are available.
Air-conditioner at night time (10 PM- 7 AM). The house has TV, PC with WIFI, washing machine, fridge, cooking facilities and a common roomand terrace.
Breakfast, lunch & dinner are provided at the dorm. Food is local style, cooked by a Vietnamese cook. The main types of food will be rice, meat, fish and vegetables. For vegetarians the choice is usually limited to rice, bread, vegetables, egg & tofu.
