Brief description and main aims

Madrasah (Arabic language) simply means the same as school does in English language, whether private, public for any primary or secondary school such as Madrasah Ibtidaiyah/MI (elementary school), Madrasah Tsanawiyah/MTs (Junior High) and Madrasah Aliyah/MA (Senior High). Madrasah have played a major role in Indonesia. They emphasize core values of sincerity, simplicity, individual autonomy, solidarity and self control. Most of Madrasah provide low cost education for Indonesian citizens, as mostofthe studentsarecoming from a low to medium economic family background.

Main Activities

The students attend formal school like any other students outside of Madrasah and they learn general subjects (science, sport, English, social etc). In the Madrasah the students are also emphasized to study more Koran and about Islam. The Madrasah has manycomponents such as traditional religious education, vocational skills training and character development. The project sites will be in MI (Elementary school), MTs (Junior High) and MA (Senior High) which are located mostly in rural area in Central and East Java. The volunteer can choose which of the Madrasah’s levels he or she would like to workbased on their interest. Those Madrasah mostly previously used to receive volunteers.

Volunteer tasks

The role of the volunteers will be to assist the local teachers in classes by organizing basic English conversations. Also by helping the teachter to motivate the students in their studies, to organize activities that will help enrich their live skills and to get involved in the other activities at the project site.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should love to work with children and be open minded, mature, respectful of local customs, tolerant, creative, flexible, patient, confident and independent, especially in motivating the students to speak up and be active in practicing conversation.  The volunteer cannot be vegan or strict vegetarian, but flexible vegetarian is still welcomed. Please accept our apology’s that we are not open for volunteers with mental disabilities and people with mobility and movement disability’s such as limitation on physical functioning, blindness, deft, epilepsy, sleep disorders etc.
The volunteer cannot have any piercings on the face, no visible tattoos and should have common hair style(no colorful hair or dreadlocks) and a Certificate of Good Conduct from the police.
The volunteer must never have been found guilty in a criminal case in the volunteer’s home country or in another country. It is strictly prohibited to possess narcotics, marijuana, opium, stimulants or other drugs.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The accommodation and food will be provided by a local host. The volunteer will stay in the dormitory or host family (to be confirmed). Facilities are simple and Indonesian style (no hot water, no internet, and no washing machine). Unfortunately the volunteer cannot be vegan or a strict vegetarian, but a flexible vegetarian is still welcomed.
