Pesantren Project (IDN-27)

Type: Education: Teaching languages - Country: Indonesia

Brief description and main aims

Pesantren or Pondok Pesantren are Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia. The pesantren education system originated from traditional Javanese dormitories to learn religious philosophies. Pesantren have played a major role over the centuries.

They emphasise core values of sincerity, simplicity, individual autonomy, solidarity and self-control. Young men and women are separated from their families, which contributes to a sense of individual commitment to the faith and close bonding with a teacher.

Most of pesantren provide Indonesian citizens with dormitory living at low or no cost for the students. The students start activities early in the morning with a prayer ending the evening with a study group in the dormitory.

During the day, the students attend formal school like any other students outside of pesantren (science, sports, English etc). In the late afternoon and evening they have to attend religious studies. The pesantren has possible components, such as traditional religious education, vocational skills training and character development.

Pesantren are used to receiving long term volunteers from Europe. By doing so, the volunteers will have better understanding about what Islam is.
