Brief description and main aims

Instituto Psicopedagógico “Juana Leclerc” is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation that takes care of children, youth and adults with mental disabilities and with learning difficulties. It offers a comprehensive assistance through diverse community strategies with specialised programmes for children and youth with mental disabilities, providing centre-based education, as well as community-based rehabilitation programmes. 

Main Activities

There are special programmes consisting in the development of the students’ skills and dexterities towards achieving their personal, social and work independence, hence improving their quality of life. All of the programmes of the organisation are divided into three categories:

  • Face-to-face Special Education: offered within the organisation’s premises with pre-school, primary and secondary school, and vocational workshops.
  • Community Programmes: carrying out outreach projects to involve the students with their communities.
  • Support Services: such as language therapy, multisensory, recreational and artistic, psychology support and therapy, social support, health support, pedagogical support, school for parents and therapeutically groups.

Volunteer tasks

The volunteer can support any of the existing programmes, and if she/he has music and/or sports skills, workshops can be organised and carried out with the children and youth. The volunteer could support:

  • vocational and occupational training workshops such as the production of spices, carpentry, bakery, organic fertilizer production, among others
  • artistic therapy such as painting and dance
  • social work and psychology activities
  • managing the social media account of the organisation

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should:
  • be at least  20 years old.
  • have basic knowledge of Spanish.
  • be interested and motivated to work with people with mental disabilities
  • be proactive, patient and creative
  • be respectful to Christian beliefs as it’s part of the organisation’s activities, for example, praying before commencing activities.
High school to university education especially on special education is highly appreciated

Location

The project is located in Tegucigalpa, Francisco Morazán.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family.

More Information

The project is available to start in February every year for 6-12 months.
