Brief description and main aims

FUHNICER - Fundación Hondureña para el Niño con Cáncer is a non-profit & apolitical charity with the main aim of providing free cancer treatment to more than 5,000 children of Honduras who are suffering from cancer, who are from low economic resource families, and who are obtaining health care in public hospitals and clinics throughout the country.

 

Main Activities

FUHNICER uses the slogan “Salva mi vida” (“Save my life”) to fundraise and reduce the percentage of mortality of children with cancer in Honduras, providing the adequate cancer treatment in a timely, free manner and professional health care. FUHNICER provides:

  • oncological medication and support
  • specialised laboratory exams
  • supplies and medical equipment
  • economical support to mobilise parents and children from their place of origin
  • social work and assistance
  • psychological support to  parents and sick children
  • food for parents and patients
  • recreational and educational activities
  • funereal expenses
  • educational campaigns on child cancer

Volunteer tasks

The volunteer mainly works in Hospital Escuela Universitario de la UNAH (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras)  in Tegucigalpa, which is one of the main public and teaching hospitals of Honduras where most of medicine students of the national public university carry out their medical internships and residencies. Within this hospital, FUHNICER has a special ward where the volunteer can carry out tasks such as:

  • sharing time and playing with the children who are patients,
  • organising several activities (games, handicrafts, reading, colouring, etc.)
  • talking with the parents of the children

If the volunteer has the abilities and enough Spanish knowledge, he/she can also carry out some of the following activities in the main admin office of FUHNICER:

  • researching information
  • translating documents
  • creating awareness campaigns about cancer
  • supporting the organisation and execution of the different fund-raising activities

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should:
  • be at least 18 years old.
  • be emotionally and psychologically stable as it might be very possible that the volunteer will have to deal with tough situations such as death or very ill children
  • be interested in working with children
  • have a lot of patience
  • be mature and responsible
  • possess skills to share and teach the children
  • be proactive
  • be willing to work within a hospital.
No Spanish knowledge is required unless the volunteer wants to get involved in the admin office.
 
No particular studies are required, experience working with children and youth is appreciated.

Location

The project i s located in Tegucigalpa, Francisco Morazán

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family.

More Information

The project is available to start in August and February every year for 6-12 months.
