Brief description and main aims

Asociación Artesanal Boliviana 'Señor de Mayo' is an economically viable, socially accepted and ecologically sustainable administrative company that aspires to build a fair and equal market for agricultural products.

The institution has as its associates groups from urban poor areas and rural communities, mostly Aymara and Quechua women. It promotes fair trade.

Main Activities

The company provides training to all its members so they have the same opportunities and are able to maintain the quality of their products while making contacts and doing marketing on local and international levels. The members of the association are members of the International Federation of Trade.

Volunteer tasks

The volunteer's tasks include helping with the administration, emails, translations and computation. The office work is important because the majority of people working in the project cannot read, write and sometimes not even speak Spanish (only Aymara or Quechua). Other tasks include visiting the production centers which sometimes are located in the rural areas. To participate in meetings, network and promote the organization to foreigners.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should:

  • have a lot of motivation and energy
  • try to learn Spanish the quickest way possible, it would be desirable that the volunteer has prior knowledge of the language before arrival
  • have patience, especially at the beginning 

Location

City of El Alto, next to La Paz.
