South Africa's first Volunteer Centre (originally Voluntary Aid Bureau) started in Cape Town in 1979, as a project of the International Year of the Child. This office opened in 1980 and was at first run by volunteers. Its mission is to motivate and develop effective volunteering through consultation, training, information and placement services for the benefit of all.
The Volunteer Centre team includes a volunteer management committee, paid staff and many wonderful volunteers. The Volunteer Centre closely cooperates with Canada World Youth and the ICYE Federation, with which it started cooperating in 2007, becoming an ICYE Associate Member in November 2009. Volunteers placements include work with children, Volunteer Centre's satellite offices, and community development organisations in various locations in and around Cape Town, South Africa.
